Should Home Inspectors Be Regulated?

Posted by Sherry Rioux on February 27, 2014

Home InsJust writing that made me think how ridiculous a question that is.  Of course they should be regulated and it looks like the time is near when this will finally come about.

Last year, the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services created a panel to look at the issue and make recommendations regarding mandatory qualifications for home inspectors. The panel included expert volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, including home inspectors, consumers and representatives from real estate, law, education and insurance across Ontario.

The report includes 35 recommendations on the:

– regulation of home inspectors
– technical standards for home inspectors
– professional home inspector qualifications
– consumer protection requirements
– regulatory governance for Ontario’s home inspection industry

Given that the majority of home buyers today chose to have an inspection and, given that they rely heavily on the findings of an inspection, I personally don’t feel the recommendations go far enough. For example, while a new inspector has to pass an exam of some kind, there is no mandatory educational requirement included.

My experience here in the Collingwood and Blue Mountian area with home inspectors has been mixed.  Some have been horrid and most have been excellent.  We have several inspectors in the area who take their responsibilities very seriously and their experience makes them an invaluable part of the home buyers team.  Others though…not so good.

The panel’s report is available and the Ministry is seeking feedback on the recommendations. You can visit the Ministry of Consumer Services website to read the report and provide your feedback to the Ministry.  I did.  Hope you do too.
