Has The Admiral Moored His Ship?
A few years ago, local developers purchased the old Admiral School site at the corners of Hume and Hurontario Streets in Collingwood’s downtown Heritage Conservation District. They were granted a demolition permit before submitting a new plan and well, down came the school.
After presenting a plan to build a six-storey mixed commercial and residential development, a protracted public battle ensued that centered on the need for a new structure that would blend into the district and offer an inviting gateway into the downtown core. In the end, a compromise was reached that left perhaps nobody happy: to build a five storey building with the fifth storey set back, in a heritage design.
I was active myself in protesting the original council decision to allow a six storey building however, I have never been opposed to an appropriate redevelopment on that corner. I happen to like the developer involved and I want to see him succeed. I also think having many new residences smack-dab downtown is rather exciting.
After a long delay due to these and other factors, the Admiral Collingwood Place plan was finally given the green light and site work commenced. Blasting started to remove the rock bed allowing for creation of the underground parking. Trucks were busy and the BOOM! could be felt for miles away.
And then suddenly… nothing. For weeks now, there has been no movement, no blasting, no activity. Is the project moored or under revision or ???
