Winter In Collingwood

Posted by Sherry Rioux on December 11, 2017

We got about a foot of snow last night and it looks like a winter wonderland around Collingwood today.  Blue Mountain officially opens for the season tomorrow and that means ski season is underway.

Potential property buyers often ask what the winter is like here.  They assume or perceive that we get tons of snow and that living can be harsh however, they are mistaken. I had that fear as well when we moved here in 1986 since I’ll shamefully admit I am not a winter lover.

A large part of the tourism economy in South Georgian Bay relies on getting skiers to and from Blue Mountain.  That means keeping roads open, plowed and safe which they do here exceptionally well.  While the GTA may declare a state of emergency with 2” of snowfall, we barely notice.  As I mentioned, we got about a foot last night and this morning, nothing is closed, the sun is shining and the roads are clear.  Yes, according to this website, we do get more snow than some other areas but we also get a lot less than places like Owen Sound, Midland, Huntsville and other areas.  They key is that the snow is managed well.
