Posted by Sherry Rioux on March 27, 2017

Did you know break and enters are all too common an occurrence in Ontario? There are more than 150,000 break-ins reported to police annually in Canada and of those 6 in 10 are residential break-ins.  During the 12 months following a break-in research indicates a person’s decision to commit a crime is directly tied to their risk of being caught.

Make your home less appealing to a burglar!

Safeguard Ontario Property Security Program’s specially trained members of the OPP and OPP’s Auxiliary Policing Program will conduct a property security review of your home.  This property security review will provide the home owner with basic suggestions on how they may target harden their property. Their focus will be on targeting techniques to prevent and reduce property crimes

A SafeGuard Ontario Property Security Review will provide a home owner with a review of your homes windows, locks and pins, door hinges, frames and locks, exterior lighting, garage security and the house numbers displayed. You will receive a copy of this review in addition to an information package that includes tips on how to secure and protect your property.

Combined with SafeGuard Ontario, Operation Identification is a property marking initiative. This program was designed to discourage the theft of valuables by simply engraving an identifying number in a visible area. This simplifies the identification of recovered stolen property but more importantly makes your valuables unappealing to burglars.

An electric property engraver is available at OPP detachments, free of charge, after having a property review.

A property owner can also visit www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca and take the Ontario Home Security Audit Guide. This home security audit will provide guidance about reducing the risk of burglary around the home. You can maximize the security of your home with inexpensive and do-it-yourself suggestions provided.
