Green Ontario Energy Program
The Ontario government is making it worthwhile for homeowners to complete energy-efficient renovations by making $600 million (generated from Ontario’s carbon market) in rebates available over a 4 year period through the “Green Ontario Fund”. The energy saving program, launched in August 2017, is intended to encourage investment that will help local business while also helping local homeowners fight climate change and reduce the cost of ongoing expenses. The initial rebate offered a free Smart thermostat installation available to eligible homeowners and was so successful that the government aims to have 140,000 such thermostats installed by Spring 2018. Smart thermostats are connected to the internet to allow for adjustments to be made via smart phone or they can be set to self-adjust. Homeowners of fully detached, semi-detached homes, townhouses and row houses can register via the Green Ontario Fund website. Renters require the landlord’s permission to register.

This year the program has been expanded to include rebates of up to $7200 for new insulation, up to $5000 for new windows, and up to $20,000 for new ground or air source heat pumps as long as homeowners hire a contractor who was successfully screened by the Green Ontario Fund. Interested homeowners can register to have an approved contractor complete the installation.
