Enjoy Great Indian Food In Collingwood

Posted by Sherry Rioux on March 2, 2009

A few months ago, I was introduced to The Tandoori House on Balsam Street in Collingwood and now, I’m somewhat of a regular.  It’s fantastic!

I used to think of Indian food as being very spicy which is not something that appeals to me.  It turns out that is a misconception and at the Tandoori House, almost anything on the menu can be made from mild to spicy hot at your request.

Mr. Miah, the proprietor, arrived in Canada from Calcutta, India in 1991.  He worked in the restaurant business in Toronto and Stratford before opening the Tandoori House in Collingwood last August.  He’s a charming and chatty man who clearly takes great pride in his operation which is spotlessly clean with superb food that many say is the best Indian food north of Toronto.  A grandiose statement but quite possibly true.

The extensive menu offers things like Butter Chicken, Tandoori dishes, seafood, chicken, beef and lamb dishes as well as vegetarian entrees.  One of my favourite lunches starts with a basket of Peshwari Nan bread ($3.50) stuffed with coconut, raisins and almonds.  For the main dish, I can’t resist the mild Chicken Kashmiri  ($12.95)which includes tender chunks of boneless white chicken cooked in various spices a red cream sauce and finished with coconut, ground almonds and a plump lichee. Ladled over a generous serving of basmati rice, the flavours are delightful and fulfilling.  I’ve never had room for dessert but always enjoy a Chai tea ($2.25) after my meals.

The restaurant is licensed and seats 45 making it a suitable setting for an interesting party or gathering.  They have a website  where you can see pictures, view the menu and find directions.

Many people don’t seem to know this little gem exists due to a not-so-great location and I worry for Mr. Miah because the restaurant business is highly competitive and challenging.  Nonetheless, I hope you’ll seek out this treasure for lunch or dinner soon.  It’s located in the free-standing building beside the Balsam street Plaza opposite the Canadian Tire gas bar.  It’s open Monday to Saturday from 11- 9 and Sundays from 4- 8:30.

Update May 2012
