Feeling Chipper at Sunset Point
Guest Post by Chris
Being of Irish/English/Scottish/French descent, I look for the one true sign of spring: the opening of the Chipper, a chip wagon at Sunset Point, Collingwood.
Yes, it’s true. Chips (or fries as they are often called) from a wagon equal spring and summer to me, and the ones at ‘the Point’ are delish!
Ahhh, the humble potato! Is there a harder working veggie than you? I dare say, nothing goes better with these humble, deep-fried, crispy, satisfying, vegetarian-friendly slices of potatoey-decadence than a sunny day, sitting on a picnic table overlooking Sunset Point and Georgian Bay… except maybe the rest of the menu at this chip stand: hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, chicken selections and of course, ice cream! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that all the fixings are just right too: malt vinegar, pillowy-soft fresh buns, homemade pickles, oniony-onions, hot pickles and bacon…lots of bacon.
The very pleasant owner is quick to serve you and just as quick with a big welcoming smile. She’s a wee bit French and therefore makes a truly authentic (and yummy) poutine. A must-try item on the menu, I am told! As is the bacon and cheese wrapped hot dog…paired with sweet potato fries and a terrific mayo dip. Lip-smackingly good, Marg attests.
Now, you may prefer to dine at home, and of course take-out is an option here, but my recommendation is to pull up a bench, bring the kids and the dog, and breath in our very beautiful landscape as you enjoy wholesome food, cooked well in a clean kitchen by delightful people who are genuinely happy to see you. You won’t be disappointed.
The Chipper chip wagon is open until Labour Day weekend, so make sure you stop by soon (…and often…)
