From Craft Breweries to Craft Cannabis Farms

Posted by Sherry Rioux on January 9, 2019

When it comes to cannabis, it feels like the gold rush.  I wonder if this happened post-prohibition?  Many people are jumping on the opportunities the new laws have created.

There are people who are buying properties for the purposes of establishing craft cannabis grow operations.  I have to say that until first talking to them, I hadn’t even thought about this new business opportunity but heck, it makes sense to me now.  There are craft breweries and wineries, why not craft cannabis growers?

In our Southern Georgian Bay region, there is already a strong foothold in the market and an interesting cannabis culture.  In Meaford, there is a group called Mother Earth’s Natural Design (MEND) who have already been active for some time.

In Clearview, Peace Naturals was the first non-incumbent company to be granted a medical cannabis production license by Health Canada, and were also the first group licensed to sell medicinal cannabis oils

In Thornbury, you can get a cannabis consultation through a spa service and in Collingwood, you can obtain medical marijuana at the Cannabis Medical Clinic.

Also in Collingwood, construction is underway of a 120,000+ sq ft facility by Georgian Bay Biomed who state on their website that they are, “aiming to become the world leader in highly advanced, automated, and science-driven cannabis production.”

One of the first priorities of the new councils in Ontario will be to establish rules around cannabis retail outlets and this will make for an interesting discussion I’m sure as old attitudes are hard to shake even though cannabis is now fully legal in Canada.

I’m sure we’ll see many more innovative business models emerge in the years to come providing new opportunities. The ones that will succeed are the ones who are well funded, highly capable and knowledgeable in business operations. The rest may get lost in the weeds.
