Why is there a Blue Flag at Wasaga Beach?

Posted by Sherry Rioux on June 25, 2007

wasaga_web.jpgThe warm weather is here and it’s that time when we all head to “The Beach.” Those of us who have the priviledge of living here, head to THAT beach.  Not only does Wasaga Beach have the distinction of being home to the longest freshwater beach in the world, it can now proudly state that it is a member of a prestigious number of communities in 36 countries around the globe to be awarded Blue Flag status by The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), based in Denmark and operated in Canada by Environmental Defence. Nine beaches in Ontario have been certified to fly the Blue Flag, an international program for clean beaches.  According to a media release from Environmental Defence, to qualify for the Blue Flag, all nine beaches had to meet 27 strict standards based on water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety and services.  You can read more about it on the Blue Flag website. See you at the beach and hey, Congratulations Wasaga!
