Collingwood’s Timeless Favourite Restaurants

Posted by Sherry Rioux on November 28, 2017

Independent restaurants are less common these days than they used to be.  When was the last time you went out to eat at an eatery that wasn’t either owned by a parent company or part of a chain?  The restaurants on this list are worth visiting not only because they have achieved success as independently run dining establishments (so you know they must be good!), but also because the food and service are so good that each has stood the test of time.  Every one of these local institutions has been in operation at their present locations in Collingwood for at least 20 years.  Now that’s worth celebrating the next time you’re in the mood to go out to eat!

The Olde Red Hen Restaurant
146 Hurontario Street

Serving locals and visitors for over 40 years, The Olde Red Hen is known for their all day breakfast as well as home-style favourites.  A true old fashioned diner with a busy, friendly atmosphere, the Red Hen is a great spot for casual, family-friendly dining.  Open 7 days a week.

Rockdell Steakhouse
9386 Beachwood Road

Family owned and operated since 1978, this traditional steakhouse offers steak done the old fashioned way: all entrees include soup of the day, salad, choice of potato and seasonal veggies.    With a menu including a variety of cuts, seafood, daily specials and a kid’s menu, there’s something to satisfy every appetite.  A great spot for large gatherings as well as a quiet dinner for two, reservations are recommended.

Paula’s Pantry and Gifts
17 Eighth Street

A Collingwood staple since 1986, this family owned bakery offers classic bakery goodies as well as breakfast and lunch selections.  Handmade favourites such as Peanut Butter Marshmallow Squares, Brownies, Chelsea Buns and a variety of breads, muffins and cookies hearken back to the old days of homemade goodness.  Special order trays of sandwiches and treats are available as well as custom made wedding cakes, desserts and seasonal items.

The Iron Skillet Restaurant and Pub
20 Balsam Street

A Collingwood landmark since 1991, The Iron Skillet presents a varied menu including daily features (think Mexican Mondays or Schnitzel Wednesdays) plus steak, seafood and Cajun dishes.  The recent addition of a licensed patio allows for alfresco dining during good weather and live entertainment.  Featured on the Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here”, the Skillet is known for generous portions, so come hungry.
