Another One of my Favourite Collingwood Businesses
The first time I saw one of Anke Lex’s pottery pieces was at a seminar. A bowl featuring images of Collingwood’s historic downtown was presented to John Sewell in thanks for a presentation he gave in town. One look at that bowl and I had to have one. Although it took about another 18 months, one did finally find it’s way under the Christmas tree a few years ago and today it is still one of my very favourite art pieces in our home.
Ceramica de Anke is located at 85 Hurontario Street in Collingwood’s downtown. She is tucked into the back of Clerkson’s or, her store can be entered through a back door in the alley off Second Street. Anke is one of those people you can’t help but love the minute you meet her. After being born and raised in Germany, Anke and her family traveled extensively and it was in Mexico where she first developed her passion for clay. Following formal study in art fundamentals and ceramics, Anke opened her studio in a 19th century historic building at 85 Hurontario Street in the downtown. She and her ever-so-talented husband Richard, beautifully restored and renovated the building which led to a well-deserved heritage award.
Today, Anke creates tile murals, maiolica pottery, functional stoneware and water features in her studio. This spring, she’ll be relocating her studio to her home with a re-opening planned in the fall. By the way, Anke will be holding a moving sale starting on March 16th with 15% off stock including tile murals. The last day of studio operations will be April 12th.
