Planners Series 2016: Wasaga Beach
Each year, local planners meet with the Membership of our SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® to review the past year and tell us about upcoming news for each municipality. For your reading pleasure, below is a summary of the planning presentation from the town of WASAGA BEACH.
Sheena Harrington-Slade, Planner II and Nathan Wukasch, Planner, gave us an update:
Wasaga Beach is shifting focus to urban policies. They’re striking advisory committees for tourism and events. They are looking to become an age-friendly community (for seniors!) Council is pursuing a high school. The town is working with the county for affordable housing.
There is focus on a downtown master plan – answering the question, ‘where is the heart’ of Wasaga Beach. Overwhelmingly, the main beach area garnered most support. The town is looking at that area to bring back vibrancy to Beach 1 and Beach 2 areas. They are looking to make facilities more walkable and to include pedestrian thoroughfares, perhaps a centre square where events, art and culture will take place.
The official plan is being updated as the current version is 13 years old.
Building permits are up significantly this year, and our speakers reminded us that service charges, development charges (town and county) will increase, and there are new code requirements in January 2017.
Secondary Units are permitted in R1, R2, R3 zones and within single-detached, link, semi-detached and some townhouses, and must meet locational restrictions and servicing requirements.
