Feds To Study Health Impacts of Wind Turbines

Posted by Sherry Rioux on August 13, 2012

No matter what your thoughts may be about industrial scale wind turbines in Ontario, there is no question that they spur controversy.  In our area, there are a few proposed installations so the debate rages on with lawsuits launched, friendships destroyed and tempers flared.  Very, very sad.

One of the issues turbine detractors talk a great deal about, is the health impacts of living close to turbines.  There are numerous studies; some say there are no impacts, others say there are.  Doesn’t this drive you crazy?  Facts are facts so, how is it possible for people to derive different conclusions?

It seems that the Feds are finally weighing in on this matter.  According to the media release issued on July 10th,  “Health Canada, in collaboration with Statistics Canada, will conduct a research study that will explore the relationship between wind turbine noise and health effects reported by, and objectively measured in, people living near wind power developments.”

It will be interesting to read the results.  Will strong lobbyists on either side of the coin have strong enough input to affect the outcomes?  My guess is that they will.

Note:  It’s tricky to find detailed information on what is or is not proposed.  This website seems to have the most comprehensive list I could find.
